Looks like I'll be fine if I can just get the most common ones to click in this ol' brain.

Rhonda- Thanks for your kind words. Learning to touch type has been a struggle, but knowing how has already made life easier at my tiny part-time job.

RE: Use of symbols in transcription

Just wanted to say - I'm SO proud of you for practicing your typing to gain speed. I know it is frustrating at times...but keep up the practice. It will pay off sooner than you think! Main thing to remember...type by touch - don't look at the keyboard - a direct quote from my 9th grade typing teacher at DC Virgo Jr. High School 1975 (learned on a manual typewriter - meaning not electric for all you young people out there lol).

Rhonda

RE: Use of symbols in transcription

Not sure which symbols Mavis teaches, but there are a few used with some regularity in the transcriptions: the ampersand &, the percent sign %, the plus sign +, the minus sign -, parentheses (), quotation marks " ", and the virgule / are the ones that come to mind. Brackets are used if you flag information for the instructor (or doctor when you get to that point) [ ].

Hope that helps ;)

RE: Use of symbols in transcription

You will use the () and "quote" as well as comma's, colons, plus symbol and minus as well as the /, but other than those not too many that I can think of.

Use of symbols in transcription

Hi! I am attempting to teach myself how to type correctly. I am using a Mavis Beacon CD-ROM and slowly making progress. I know the letters well and numbers/ punctuation pretty well. My speed has gone from pathetic to better, but still too slow to sign up for classes here. I'm currently doing battle with symbols and really struggling.

So my question is... Do I really need to know my symbols before I start the course? I did a bit of research on the forums here and it looks like the use of symbols is discouraged. I don't want this to be the thing that trips me up when I go to take the pre-enrollment typing test.

Thanks for your help. Back to typing practice.
