Are M-TEC^® programs accredited?

M-TEC^® has chosen not to be accredited due in part to the expensive review cost, which we would have to pass on to students. We believe the approval through our state board is more intense and covers similar levels of review. We have often found some accredited schools who are training medical transcriptionists to be inadequate in terms of the core competencies offered, as well as the instructor support. Some programs that are accredited do not follow the AHDI Model Curriculum and are not AHDI-approved programs. We have also seen supporting documentation that suggests it is rare that credit from a distance education program will be accepted in transfer to another school. The only possible benefit to being accredited is the ability to accept alternative government financing, which is also not guaranteed for distance education programs at this time. Because M-TEC^® wishes to control quality by limiting the number of students enrolled in our program at any given time, we do not believe the benefits of accreditation to bring in an increased number of students is of value to the outcome of our program. Our student loan currently offers $10.00 a month payments or $0 payment for one year. We believe that is a better benefit to our student body.

I was just wondering, is M-Tec an accredited program? I was trying to find information stating that is was but haven't found any... Is it nationally accredited?

I just want to add, to let you know that this is not some kind of spam solicitation, that I am a military spouse myself. My husband is an active duty Marine. I am a student at M-TEC, and am heavily involved with the Online Chapter of AAMT and starting to get my feet wet at the national level with AAMT.

The purpose of this initiative is to help military spouses not only get into a profession that fits our unique lifestyle almost perfectly, but also work on setting up education funding for spouses who would like to go into medical transcription. As you know, there is all kinds of educational funding for the service members but little to none for the spouses. We are trying to change that with regard to medical transcription. In order to get the Department of Defense (DoD) to listen, we need to let them know how many future military spouse MTs are out there! :)

AAMT is working with the Department of Defense Military Spouse program, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the Medical Transcription Association to develop outreach and awareness of the medical transcription profession to military spouses and to provide more information on the newly formed National Registered Apprenticeship program for medical transcriptionists.
