Monday night is also Monday Night Forum at 8:00 for us EST people. :crying: This means I have to dig out the directions that go to my DVD player and figure out how to record HOUSE for later viewing. DAGNABIT!!!!!

Can anyone else verify the scheduling change for HOUSE?

AAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!!

Introduction topic

Hello everyone:

I thought it would be neat if we started an introduction topic. Can someone make it a sticky? There are a lot of new people and it seems most people introduce themselves when they enroll, but I thought it would be neat to have a topic just for introductions.

Basically, tell us about yourself. Married, kids, pets, what your goals are after graduation, why you chose MT, other jobs, and anything else you would like to share about yourself.

I will go first.

My name is Betsey and I am 35 years young. I have been married a little over 3 years and I have a 16 month old son. We will be trying for #2 next summer. We live in Texas. I have a cat named Sam. I have been an RN for 10 years. I only work part-time (2 days a week) and I would like to stay part-time while the kids are growing up. I chose MT for an additional income and I like that I can do it from home. I love anything and everything medical so MT is right up my alley. I love "hearing the story" if you know what I mean. After graduation I would like to work as an IC for a national company. I want to do acute care.

I enrolled October 1st and I am currently working on Session 2 and so far I am really enjoying it! It seems to be a very well put together program. So far, I am impressed!

Ok, who's wants to be next?

I just couldn't resist...
A man went into a pet store and asked the clerk, "Do you
have any dogs that go cheap?"

The salesman said, "No, just birds."

-----------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What do you call an Italian with a rubber toe?

A: Roberto

Marley and Me

My family hasn't been to see a movie all together in YEARS... In fact, the last time I got my mom to a movie theatre was to see Armegeddon! It was Christmas Day, we had our meal and everything out of the way. I thought... *my mom was reading the book Marley and Me* and that it would be cool for the whole family to go see a movie since it just came out today. So I ordered the tickets online and My Mom, Dad, and two brothers went and saw it.

GREAT FEELGOOD MOVIE!

My description may be a little confusing. I will not elaborate and spoil anything but you will laugh very hard... and cry very hard. It's not just about the dog, or a "dog movie", its about life in general.
So its BOTH a "must see" and a "dont see" depending on the kind of person you are. However, I feel if because you fear crying/emotion and you dont see it, its your loss. If you are the type of person that don't like "tear jerkers" then this is not the movie for you.

For me just being an animal lover in general, I knew I had to see it... it was so much more touching because it was about a yellow lab, and it looked so much like my "Nellie".

So anyway, just wanted to share because it was such a great and touching movie. Especially on Christmas Day! For those of you that do not know, it IS a true story and the book has been out a long time and ended up a best seller. Jennifer Anniston and Owen Wilson were wonderful in it.

I just want to thank you Kat Lewis.

My name is Trish and my instructor is Kat Lewis. I am new to the forum and after I posted this I started to check some of the other posts and found someone asking about Facebook..and I found out that alot..well it seems to be...most people prefer that over Myspace..but if anyone is interested I am always up to talking to different people. FYI..I am 34-years-old and currently a stay at home mom. I have a hard time balancing everything and would love to hear from other moms who might be trying to study and have family time..www.myspace.com/joyndave

Zune issues

I don't know if many of you have a Zune for an MP3 player, but I do. My husband got me one last year for Christmas, 30 g size. I love this thing - plays music wonderfully, plays the radio, can share music with other Zunes via wireless magic, does great with video on long car rides for the kid. For those that don't know, the Zune is basically Microsoft's answer to the iPod.

This morning, however, Microsoft's true craftsmanship came to light in a way I have never heard of before. I get up this morning and find my Zune on the kitchen table, the battery totally depleted, instead of in its charging dock with speakers. I figured my husband may have borrowed it, and was a bit annoyed that he didn't put it back where it belongs 10 feet away. I try to get it to charge up, and things look good for a bit until the screen sticks - and stays stuck. No buttons will work AT ALL. Hmmmmmm. So I look at my warranty information and troubleshooting information, and I try to do all the dohickey things to do, and nothing is working. I call customer support and get the annoyingly pleasant voice trying to walk me through all the steps I had already tried. I try to get a live person, and after being on hold for 15 minutes I give up. I try to get online to see if I can find some other information. I stumble upon an article published just today, that all Zunes of the 30 g size (apparently in the entire universe) stopped working this morning around 1:30, getting stuck on the same screen, and nothing will work to fix them at this point. The best part is that Microsoft has no idea what the heck happened. Thank you Microsoft! It almost seems like some sort of alien space craft mothership called all the little Zunes back home at the same time, and we're left behind with these little host bodies. Very weird. Sort of a Y2K for 2008 to happen with one type of device instead of all computers.

Needless to say, I am at least glad that it is all Zunes and not just mine, as I hope (perhaps foolishly) that there will be a solution to this problem soon, or at least some sort of credit towards replacing these little buggers. I'm sure any techie people will have a field day with this one!

A Video Clip Worth Watching

This was sent to me in an email. We're supposed to be getting a huge snowstorm tomorrow, and my daughter's school just sent out notice that they are closing in anticipation of it. That was supposed to be her last day of school before - get this - TWO FULL WEEKS OF CHRISTMAS VACATION! So, now we have two weeks off, plus the weekends, and a snow day to deal with! Grrrrrr. I wish I could move to Arizona! I am always cold anyway, my fingers feel like they can't move easily because they're cold (with the heat on!) and my dog is even wearing a sweater indoors because his is shivering all the time. If I controlled the weather, we would get a nice amount of snowfall on Christmas, and back to beautiful summer skies the rest of the year with just the right amount of rain when it is needed. Yes, I'm feeling grumpy about this. I think I'm the only New Englander who doesn't eat fish or lobster and who also doesn't ski. Yep, Arizona sounds good right now.

Okay, thanks for letting me vent this one out. Hope everyone is having a happy Monday!

I was wondering if anyone had any good websites or reading material on children allergies. My son has had allergies since day one. Even though everyone told me that he was fine and nothing was wrong with him, I knew something wasn't right. It's not normal for a tiny baby to puke like I would. Spit up, sure! I had doctors tell me that it was normal to spit up, but I knew that having to keep a bucket by me when I fed him, was NOT normal.

Since I've nursed him, he has been able to gain weight and it was easier for him to avoid the foods that were bothering him. At that time I thought it was pretty much everything. I literally cut down to 4 foods that I could eat. It was hard, but worth it. Had he'd been formula fed, he would have never gained a pound. There is so much in formula that he was/is allergic to. But now he's of course, trying to wean and we needed to see what foods to avoid. So we finally decided to take him to an allergist.

We did not get testing until a few days after he turned one, a week or so ago. When they did the skin test, we found that he's allergic to eggs, a milk protein showed up, soybeans (but still seem to be able to drink soy milk), and peanuts and cashews. I've done a little research on it, but with the holidays quickly approaching and trying to stay on track with school work, it's proved to be very hard finding time to research these allergies.

I like the Allergist. He gave me a ton of information, but it was so much that I am just overwhelmed. Plus, he tends to be on the over exaggeration side. Which is fine because it's NICE to have someone listen to me and take me seriously about the "problems" Tyler was having.

Anyway, the point being....

I thought maybe it would be quicker if I could just get some helpful links from people that have already found useful information.

Thank you for reading and taking the time to answer.

Krista

Web platforms versus Word

I was wondering, for those of you working in Web-based platforms like the Webmedx one that we get to practice on, how difficult or easy it was for you to make the transition from Word. Anyway, I have thought about having it removed and with all this dermatology reading, I made an appointment.

What can I expect? It's a smaller clinic but the receptionist assured me that the particular doctor can do mole removals. I want it done that day. I have been going back and forth in my head trying to make up my mind about whether or not to give my 1 1/2 year old the flu vaccination. I went on the internet and came across some articles about the link to autism from (mainly) the MMR vaccination. That immediately scared me because my baby girl has gotten all of her shots, including that MMR. So I went to the American Academy of Pediatrics site and that site states that there has been significant studies proving that there is no link to autism. Well, all this different information has gotten me more confused and scared. It states at the AAP site that autism shows up between the ages of 15-18 months and that is why parents think there is a connection. I still haven't made up my mind about the flu shot because I read that the preservative thimerosal (mercury) that is used in the flu vaccination could trigger it?? I'm thinking that the risk of autism is not as big of a risk as maybe my baby (who goes to daycare once a week) getting the flu and being really sick. Just curious what other opinions are out there. This way they didn't have to scroll so much, and the whole page could be viewed on the screen. I had the same type of monitor in my cubicle, and it would rotate, but I never could figure out how to get the content to work in the portrait view. I suspect that my boss had special software or a special video card, but I never got the chance to ask him about it.

I was wondering, does anyone rotate their widescreen monitors lengthwise? If so, how is it done?

Thank you!

Cool gift idea...

For you or other medical professional on your list:

http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/plush/6708/

If you click on the Additional Images tab at the top, they show each one individually with a little microscopic picture of the real microbe. I've been looking for a decent hotel in NYC, but OMG the prices are outrageous! I've thought about staying in New Jersey and trying to bus/train over, but have been reading this can be a difficult task and very time consuming. Anybody out there been to NYC and have any secret, not-too-expensive hotels they can recommend? We certainly aren't accustomed to the Hilton or anything, but I do want to stay somewhere safe.

I know this has nothing to do with schooling (which is why I posted it in "Break Room"), but I know sometimes the best places and ideas come from people you know (my M-tec friends). (FYI, I sent out a total of 3 resumes and got 2 offers and one favorable response (but not hiring at this time.) As a side note, I did not do the shotgun approach to job hunting and send my resume to everyone who had ever hired a transcriptionist in the last 10 years, but rather, I sent only to companies who I heard were hiring or would be in the near future.)

I worked for the first time yesterday. I put in about 4 hours and did a total of 9 dictations. :ermm: I spent very little time actually transcribing. Most of the time is spent in following ways: 1. Looking up medical terms to verify if they are being used correctly, 2. Looking up drugs to verify name, condition and dosage, 3. Creating expansions for various medical terms and common sentences. I couldn't log into the hospital system yet and had no account specifics either, so I was working blind as far as formatting was concerned. QA sent me my corrected reports so I could see the proper formatting, but that was at the end of the day. I loved working on real accounts. I kept telling myself, "This is real patient information!" My boss is AWESOME and very encouraging. :D I called her at the end of the day and asked her about my work. She said I was doing great and that she expects her new people to spend a lot of time verifying terms, etc. When I was done working on reports, I spent about an hour reviewing my returned reports in much the same way you go over a returned test. I don't want to make the same mistakes twice.

I worked about 2.5 hours this morning and exceeded my lines by about 50%. I just got my reports back from QA to review and will spend some time tonight going over them in detail. I will admit, it is nice to leave a blank and not have it count against you!!!! :w00t: My boss does not want us to spend longer than 5 minutes looking anything up, so blanks happen.

Keep up the studying, and you too could work a full day and make enough money to go on a coffee date with your husband, if you share a small coffee. :D

The only direction my productivity can go is up!

Doctors' opinions about the financial bailout

I just received this email and had to share here! He was 97 years old, and sort of like a grandfather figure in my life. He was a Catholic priest who my mother worked for, and he sort of "adopted" her, and me along with her. This man made sure my mother had enough money to put me through private school and made sure we all had enough clothes and food to eat. He was there for my entire family, emotionally, financially, in every way you can imagine. He was what I believe the clergy should represent, and loved God without question. When the Boston Archdiocese had all its problems a few years ago, this poor man was so mortified that he didn't want to wear his collar in public. (We are in the Boston area.) That made me feel so sad that a few bad apples would make someone who is doing the job well feel ashamed of his devotion.

I knew this was coming, but I am still missing him. I had hoped to visit him in the nursing home on Thanksgiving, and now I'm too late. If anyone out there would mind keeping his soul in their prayers tonight, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

This is absolutely amazing!!

This is just amazing. This man creates sculptures smaller than the head of a pin. He uses a hair plucked from a housefly's back to paint with... I'm not kidding. In one sculpture he made a doll the size of a human blood cell. He can't read or write, but he creates these amazing microscopic sculptures. He sold his collection of work for $20,000,000. You've got to see this. http://www.guzer.com/videos/needle-art.php#post

distractions!!!

I am having my deck that got hit by a tornado about 2 months ago taken off and rebuilt. Even with headphones the crashing and banging of the guys outside are very distracting and I am thinking I am not going to transcribe much today and tomorrow. It will be nice to have my deck back! Anyway just taking a break!:D;)
