OK, let's hear it for the Doc in Session 15 AMT transcription 3B-1. He wins the prize for stumping me the most and not even giving me enough clues to bother trying to look it up in a book, online, or otherwise.:w00t:

By far my most challenging Doc in my many years trying to finish this course!!! I have never had so many question marks in a dictation.

I hope this isn't an inkling that things will be getting worse!!!

Okay, so I'm officially losing my mind.
Please tell me that this module was hard for everyone else, too. I think the first dictation was the worst, but I still am struggling more than I think I should with the others and feeling worried that I'm [i]still [/i]not ready to be an MT!

Will I ever really be able to understand what I'm hearing?

I know there are other discussions about this and I'm on my way to read them, but I just needed to whine.

Oh, and is the PE as hard as the reports in this module?

So I'm finally getting ready to start on my PE soon :w00t: and was wondering if there is a time limit on the test (for either the skill assessments or the transcription portion) once you start? I'm hoping I can really take my time on it.

And yes, I'm terrified! Any words of advice from those of you who have BTDT?

I just found this Power Point presentation online from a hospital with do's and don'ts of how to submit specimens for testing. It was very helpful to me when I started doing the pathology dictations. Wish I had read it before. Anyway, just thought I'd post it.

Cannot save local copy of Transcription Tips!

I am not able to save a copy of the TT updated 3/2/2010. When I open the PDF in my browser, there is no button or option to save a copy.

Edited to add: I right-clicked in the tool bar and chose Reset Toolbar. The icon to save then appeared.

Overwhelmed

I am currently working on the practice dictations for section 3 and just got back my transcription guideline #3 and am feeling extremely overwhelmed. I almost want to either start over completely or just quit. Sometimes I feel like I have taken 1 step forwards and 2 steps backwards. I know that it will get better and my husband is very supportive, but right now....I just don't know.

Well who knew.... 2-1/2 years ago, never thought I'd be sitting here FINALLY waiting on results for my PE. And that I'd be blessed with the most energetic, lovable, sweetest 10-month-old little boy after 3 miscarriages.... wow. Feeling very lucky right about now!

Ok, well not just lucky - also a little nausea mixed with some anxiety too. Thank goodness my son was just waking up from a nap when I had done the 153rd "last, no really last last" proofing and getting ready to hit the send button or I might never have actually done it. As tempted as I am, I am NOT looking at my PE for one second. Nothing I can do about it now anyway.

I have a mental To Do list a mile long with both fun and productive things to keep me occupied, but tomorrow is all about getting ready for company coming Friday. It's ok, I'm sure these 2 weeks will just F-L-Y right by, LOL :P

I am in session 3 and thought I would be moving on to session 4 but I can not seem to get anything right. The worst part is that I work really hard and spend a lot of time on each item only to do it wrong. If I thought I was not putting in enough time or really trying I could correct that part, but I am spending so much time on this. I am starting to think I am just not cut out for this at all. I reread TT, formats, and do lots of other researching but I guess I am doing something wrong. I was feeling good about the test I submitted today, but now I am just feeling very discouraged.

I'm no where near taking it but watch all the posts about it. Somehow I got the impression it didnt affect your GPA. In reading over old posts i've learned it can lower your GPA. Can anyone clear this up for me? Sharon

I am only in session 6 right now and just joined AHDI and read about MT credentials. My instructor sent an email about the RMT. So now I am getting interested in taking the RMT. I know I don't want to take it now since I'm only in basic. When should I consider taking the exam? I will probably take the review course before I take the actual RMT so when should I consider taking that also?

Ok, totally freaking out here. I'm 98.9% sure I want to turn in my PE today, although I'm totally freaking out here! I have reached the point of second-guessing and then second-guessing the original second-guessing! I have done everything I can think of, checked everything I think I can check, etc.... I need a push! :)

Anyone else have a hard time letting it go?:crazy:

Hello Everyone,

I am a little premature on asking this question, as I am only just starting Session 9, but I like to plan ahead as much as possible. After graduation I am interested in becoming an independent contractor and working from home. I would appreciate any insight, information, advice from those of you who are working at home as independent contractors.

Some areas of concern are: Would I need to create my own company (for liability reasons)? What needs to be done in regards to confidentiality issues?

Would I even want to do that? Due to the books being sold out, I can only assume that the class will is very popular. Will the class be offered again at a later date? Has anyone found this book on a different site?

Need Recommendations for Good Headset

Hello everyone. I am a Tier 1 Premier student who is just starting Session 8 and am very anxious to try out a better set of headphones. I am having trouble hearing some of the parts of dictations and have already made adjustments to my sound card equalizer. Right now I am using the FlexFone headset that came with my package from M-TEC. I have also tried my iPod earbuds. They seem a bit clearer sometimes, but I still cannot hear the same areas of dictations as with the FlexFone.

I just read the info. on the Tech page of SLC about the recommended specs of good headsets. But I would really like some feedback from actual students and grads who have used specific headsets and can recommend brands they like best. I would like to find a set that has a range of 10-30 kHz to provide a really good range.

Can you please tell me which headsets you have used and like the best? I am open to any style (i,e, over-the-ear, in the ear canal/stethoscope style, etc.)

Session 10 is driving me INSANE!

So I made the templates but now I have one document for each and every transcription (at least 2 documents per transcription because we are to transcribe twice, even if we get 100% on the first try) but I have NO IDEA how to present these to my instructor. Normally I send the practice dictations in a zip file - I am going to have a bazillion files now. I must be doing the template thing wrong. Can anyone shed some light here?

Also, 3 POTS OF COFFEE A DAY???? (one of the dictations) Do people really drink That Much Coffee normally? I mean, I'm a SLAVE to the dark master and I will not sully the ambrosia with milk or sugar, but sip the nectar black as the night sky, but THREE POTS A DAY???? :)

Ok, and lastly, I HATE TEMPLATES!!! :) I don't understand why, when the BMT says the report is an H&P and the doctor dictates in SOAP format, the H&P template would not be used? What is the point of labeling the report H&P on the BMT if we are not to use that template? ARGH!!!

Well, it "only" took about 2-1/2 years, but here I am finally done with the M-TEC coursework and in preparation mode for taking the last SA and infamous PE!!!

My teacher gave great advice (as always) for how to minimize errors on the PE including reviewing all my old assignments. I have them all archived in a folder in my email account and have found that maximizing the font to about 120% so it's easier to read also keeps the footnotes hidden at the bottom of each page so I can "quiz" myself to see if I can figure out what my error was before I look it up. Hope that makes sense, after all this time being the eternal student you tend to go a little nutty :P

Anyway, just thought I'd share that little tidbit as I'm finding this review (as painstaking as it is) to be incredibly helpful to make a cheat sheet before I attempt the SA/PE and also in general to prepare for the working world, perhaps the speech recognition editing side of MT??? Phew, pretty impressive all the learning we've done when you look back in retrospect!

Does anyone know whether to include continuing ed credits on a resume? I just completed the HIPAA compliance webinar which is 6 medical/legal credits. If so, what info do you include? Is there a "right" way to format that information? I looked in the professional development area and couldn't find any examples.

I am finishing up session 1, but haven't noticed anything that suggests an assignment that must be turned in, is this correct? I just want to make sure that I have everything done for session 1 before moving on to s2. I don't want to miss something, and if I have, please let me know what to look for so that I know in the future. From the intro syllabus I was under the impression that it would be in red inside a box, is that correct? Thank you.

People that use Word 2007 - what medical spellchecker are you using?

I had to reformat my computer and I lost my Microsoft office 2003 because a family member had owned my computer before me and I don't have the cd or anything for it, so I was going to buy Microsoft office 2007 but was told the spellchecker cd that comes in the Stedman's medical dictionary is too outdated for Word 2007 and that I would have to buy a new spell check as well? Is this what all of you word 2007 users had to do? This is highway robbery...150 for Microsoft office and another 100 for a new version of Stedman's medical spellchecker. Yikes.

Comma question

Help, please. I have gone through BOS, TT and the Comma Trauma article and the Internet. I have just emailed my instructor but am thinking that I may get a reply in a couple of hours here.

D: The left kidney and ureter seem normal, without obstruction.

D: Right lower ureteral colic with probable right ureteral stone with obstruction.

The key explains the comma in the first sentence as follows: Even though a comma is rarely used with the words "with" and "without," this is the one time the comma would be used for clarity. The comma lets the reader know that the dictator is providing additional information, i.e., the kidney seems normal "and is" without obstruction.

The second sentence is from the same dictation. Why wouldn't the same rule be applied to the 2nd sentence with the comma after "stone". Why wouldn't there be a comma after rhythm in "regular rate and rhythm without murmur. I am not seeing the difference.

Even if I get everything else right, how do I get past those ugly commas?

I received a phone call yesterday from a medical records department at a hospital in the area. They saw my resume that I had posted on the local career center website and would "potentially like to offer me a position." I didn't pick up the call since I was at work, so I haven't talked with them and don't know anything about the position yet. I won't be calling until monday to see what this is all about, either. My resume is in the passively looking category and my objective was to "find a position that would compliment my MT studies"....or something like that... along with skills/degrees I have thus far.

Has anyone had this happen? I'm wondering if this is something I should even consider. I'm in S4, so I'm not that far into the program and have so much to learn. I currently hold a part-time position as a front desk receptionist at a hotel, which isn't directly helping my future MT career. They may not even offer something seeing as how I'm such a newbie.

Any thoughts?
