Thanks Anita and Carrie.  Your advice helps me so much in determining what to purchase.  I was so surprised that the SigmaTel didn't have an equalizer and very disappointed.  If I had realized that I would have spent a little extra for a better sound card when I purchased the laptop.

I have a dell xps with vista.  I got the Sound Blaster X-fi xtreme audio notebook card.  I love it. Just make sure you install it with the CD to get the control console with all the equalizer options.
