Hi all! I talked to an MT today who has been doing this for 10 years. She gave me some advice today. Some I will take, some I will ignore. One thing she said was "Find a company that pays an hourly wage as well as a line count because sometimes it's slow, and that hourly wage, maybe it very low, is still nice to have when you aren't getting any dictations." Ok, I've NEVER heard of this. All the articles I've read from our assignments to articles I've read on my own, I've never heard of this at all. I've heard of hourly wages while training for a very short period of time, but never as a standard "backup" to the line count.
Anyone have any insight on this? It would be amazing, but I truly doubt that there are many companies, if any, that do this--or are there?
Graduate M-TECers, can you weigh in on this?

Hmmm it seems with so many hits and no responses, no one else has heard of it either! I thought it sounded to good to be true. This MT was a little bitter anyway. She seemed a little burned out. Is this a normal thing for MTs? Do you get burned out easily?
Thanks for any insight on any of these questions!

At my previous job I was paid hourly if my line count fell too low. They had an average that was based on your production. I was also always guaranteed to make at least minimum wage for hours worked. That way if I had a really bad night full of mush mouths I still got at least minimum wage, but my average was higher than that. It was all very confusing as to how they kept up with it all and averaged it. My current job doesn't have anything like that, luckily it's such an awesome job with higher wages that I don't need it. I think it's a great idea for a new MT to start as an employee with minimum wage back up, but that doesn't necessarily mean it would be the most profitable job in the long run.

I just wanted to add also that if I had no work, I just got the night off. I was never paid for running out of work unless I used paid time off (vacation days).
